Two men, Yusuf Abdulrahman and Anthony Abadi, who allegedly drove recklessly and caused the death of Insp.Felix Adewunmi attached to Iponri Division, Lagos State Command, on Friday, appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Abdulrahman, 43, and Abadi, 43, were in the court facing charges of reckless driving, driving without licence and manslaughter to which the duo, however, pleaded not guilty.
The duo reportedly committed the offence at about 1.00p.m in July 1, 2019 on the Eko Bridge on Lagos Island area of Lagos where the late Inspector Adewunmi with Appointment Number (AP/N) 220065 alongside his colleagues were on patrol.
“Abadi recklessly drove an ambulance Hiace with registration number GGE 430 EH and hit Adewunmi while on duty.
“Abadi passed `one way’ and in a bid to avoid oncoming vehicles, he swerved and knocked down Adewunmi who was on patrol. Abdulrahman was also caught driving behind him in a Nissan SUV,“ the prosecutor, Inspr. Kehinde Olatunde told the court.
While adjourning the case to August 6, 2019 for further hearing, the presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. O. O. Olatunji, granted the duo bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.
