The High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State Capital, last Thursday, has sentenced a dismissed police Corporal Tosin Daramola to death by hanging for killing his senior colleague, Inspector Lateef Shuaib.
It was reported that Daramola, in June 2016, shot and killed the Inspector and buried him behind the barracks of Osi police station in kwara State, having emptied his (Inspector Shuaib) bank account without his consent.
The late senior colleague had earlier entrusted Daramola with his account details and ATM card to withdraw ₦30,000 for him in three separate transactions when he fell ill. But It was reported that the Corporal withdrew ₦300,000, pocketing ₦270,000 without the consent of the account owner.
The issue became noticed and Daramola was challenged when the Inspector, who was not receiving transactions’ alert, sent another person to withdraw money for him from the same account only to discover that the account had been emptied.
However, in an attempt to cover up, Daramola in guise reportedly led his boss to the bush behind the Barracks, shot him on the head and buried him there.
Consequent upon the sudden disappearance of Inspector Lateef Shuaib, his family became restless, looking to places for him. Protesting and narrating their experience in July 2, 2016 on Gongo Nso radio programme with Omo Edema on Adaba 88.9FM Akure, Mrs Ahmed—a sister to the Inspector alleged that police did not give due attention to the matter at first.
A team of investigators from Police Headquarters, Ilorin later stepped into the matter and Corporal Daramola was caught in the web, dismissed from the Force and charged to court.
In his judgment on Thursday, Justice Yusuf found the convict guilty of a count change of Culpable Homicide Punishable with Death preferred against him and was sentenced to death by hanging.
